We started with the room I affectionately call “The Red Room.” The husband and wifeWe needed a place to kick back and relax, watch movies, check emails and have a glass of merlot. Together, we repurposed We nabbed an unused bedroom, gutted it to the studs, and went to town with a built in media center ,and ventless fireplace, coordinating desk, reclining theatre seating in red leather (complete with cup holders), and a “hers” area with a plush velvet sofa. Inspo came from artwork of the KISS band. When she showed me the painting of Gene Simmons, she said, “It doesn’t have to stay,” to which I emphatically replied, “oh, but it does.” And then I decided to run with the red. On the “Gene” wall, I found one of my favorite products of late: a red wall covering by the incredibly talented house of Maya Romanoff. The wall covering is made entirely from mother of pearl shells! I paired that with a red “baseball” stitch wallpaper on adjacent walls, which includes a motif of water stains that appear to run down the wall. Bold designs need areas of calm for contrast, so I placed a neutral and matte black organic textural covering on the ceiling, and added neutral elements of walnut with rounded crown moldings for all built ins, which also include leather panel accents.
